Do you know that there are 36 women in the Croatian Parliament making it 24% of all the seats in the Parliament?
Women are most represented in the Social Democrat Party (SDP), 20 deputies, while Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has 7. Croatian People’s Party (HNS) has three women deputies and Croatian Party of Pensioners (HSU) two just like the independent deputies. Croatian Labour Party and Croatian Civic Party have one woman deputy each.
These numbers present the increase of women in the Parliament compared to previous terms.
According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) data provided by national parliaments by 1st September 2013 there has been an increase of women in lower or single houses as well as in upper houses or senates. Most women politicians are in the parliaments of the Nordic countries, 42%, and least in the parliaments of the Pacific countries, 12.8%. Arab states parliaments show a rise to 17.8% of women this year compared to 11.3% last year. There were 24.3% women in the European national parliaments in September this year. IPU believes it necessary to strengthen women’s participation in the parliaments through the implementation of quotas while political parties play a crucial role in this matter.
