Đuro Sessa appointed Supreme Court president

Zagreb - Đuro Sessa is the new president of the Supreme Court, the Croatian parliament decided by majority vote on Friday.

Sessa received 84 votes in favour, while 14 MPs abstained and 33 were against. The election of the Supreme Court president requires the absolute majority in the 151-seat legislature.

He is a judge in the Supreme Court's civil division and a former president of the Croatian Association of Judges. Before being appointed a Supreme Court judge in 2008, he was a judge at the Zagreb County Court from 2002 to 2008, and the president of the Zagreb Municipal Court from 1996 to 2004.

The president of the Supreme Court is also the president of the State Election Commission. Sessa succeeds Branko Hrvatin who was at the helm of the court for three terms. (Hina)
