Zagreb - The Croatian Parliament on Friday observed a minute of silence in tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces 31 years ago after the fall of the UN-protected enclave.
"Given that today marks a sad anniversary – the Srebrenica genocide – I invite you to observe a minute of silence before we begin our work," Deputy Speaker Mišel Jakšić told lawmakers.
In July 1995, in the UN-declared safe area that was supposed to be protected by UN forces, Bosnian Serb army, police and paramilitary units committed one of Europe's worst crimes since World War II.
