22 June – Anti-fascist Resistance Day
Anti-fascist Resistance Day is celebrated on 22 June, marking the forming of the First Sisak Partisan Detachment in the Brezovica forest near Sisak. It was the first anti-fascist formation not only in Croatia, but also in this part of Europe. Starting from Sisak, the anti-fascist uprising in Croatia developed gradually, with the growing commitment of the Croatian people to the partisan movement. During the Second World War, in the parts of Croatia under the control of the anti-fascist movement, State anti-fascist Council for the National Liberation of Croatia (ZAVNOH) performed the supreme legislative and executive function. In 1945 ZAVNOH became People’s Parliament of Croatia preserving historical continuity of Croatian state sovereignty even during the people’s liberation struggle.
