Parliamentary committee on family supports amendments to social welfare legislation

Zagreb - The parliamentary committee for family and youth on Thursday unanimously supported draft amendments to the Act on Social Welfare whereby allowances will rise  for parents who have the status of caregivers for their children with disabilities or developmental delays.

In addition, their status will last also for 10 months upon the death of their children or upon the death of persons for whom they have provided care.

Thus, the monthly allowance will rise from the current €597 to €796, while parents-caregivers who care for two or more children with disabilities or developmental delays will be entitled to the monthly allowance of €995 as against the current amount of €796.

Presenting the changes, State Secretary for Demography and Youth, Željka Josić, said that they are aimed at alleviating the position of caregivers.

Also, costs of transport for educational purposes will be covered for children with developmental delays.

The committee dismissed the proposal suggested by the Bridge party on a universal child allowance between €100 and €180 monthly, which should depend on the number of children in a family.
