Zagreb - Croatia needs to further improve its waste management system to ensure a successful green transition, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković told parliament on Tuesday, pledging that the government would resolve the waste remediation issue in Gospić.
Waste management centres are operating in Marišćina, Kaštijun and Biljane Donje, as well as the recently opened Babina Gora facility, while centres in Piškornica, Lučino Razdolje and Lećevica are under construction, Plenković said while presenting his annual report on the state of the nation.
Preparations are also under way for facilities in Orlovnjak, Šagulje and Zagreb.
Ahead of an afternoon debate on a motion to dismiss the government, proposed by the SDP with the support of 54 MPs over an illegal hazardous waste dump in the Lika region, Plenković said the government was cleaning up environmental hotspots and waste dumps.
"Just as we resolved the waste slag issue in Biljane Donje and the problem of baled waste in Varaždin, we will also resolve the waste remediation issue in Gospić, which we have included in the Waste Management Plan alongside Samobor, Poznanovec, Benkovac, Lovinac and Pazin," he said.
Plenković said the government's aim was to protect public health and the environment, remediate contaminated sites and strengthen oversight through the new Waste Management Act.
