Jandroković marks World Romani Language Day, initiative originated in Croatia

Zagreb - The Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Gordan Jandroković, on Wednesday congratulated the Roma community on World Romani Language Day, emphasising that the initiative to establish the day originated in Croatia.

"Today's occasion reminds us of the richness and importance of the Romani language as an essential element of the Roma community’s identity and a significant part of the cultural diversity of Europe and the world. We are particularly pleased that it was Croatia that initiated the establishment of World Romani Language Day," he wrote in a message sent on behalf of the Croatian Parliament to all members of the Roma community in Croatia.

He stressed that this was yet another confirmation of Croatia's unequivocal commitment to respecting minority rights, genuinely valuing diversity and promoting mutual understanding. "Three years later, by proclaiming 5 November as World Romani Language Day, UNESCO sent a concrete and very strong message about the contribution of the Romani language to the world's linguistic heritage," he added.

Jandroković highlighted that today is a significant day for Roma around the world and a reminder of the diverse minority heritage that enriches Croatia, as well as an incentive to firmly protect pluralism and tolerance in Croatian society.

He added that it is important to continue systematic and concrete efforts aimed at improving the position of Roma in Croatia across all spheres of life -- from education and employment to access to health and social protection, from housing issues to political and social inclusion.

"On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of World Romani Language Day, I once again extend my sincere congratulations and best wishes to all members of the Roma community in Croatia and worldwide, for success and the preservation of the language as the strongest bond that connects Roma around the world and continues to inspire them," Jandroković concluded.
