Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković on Wednesday congratulated members of the Roma minority in Croatia on International Roma Day as he opened a new parliamentary session.
“Today invites us to reflect on the progress made in supporting the Roma community, as well as the challenges Roma still face,” he said. “We must remain committed to building a society in which all citizens are truly equal, with equal access to education, employment, healthcare and other conditions necessary for a dignified life.”
He noted that the day commemorates the First World Romani Congress held in 1971 in London, when historic decisions were adopted on the Roma flag, anthem and language. This was, he said, “undoubtedly a key moment in the international recognition of Roma identity and a strong impetus for preserving the cultural heritage of the Roma people worldwide”.
“Let us act together so that any form of discrimination or prejudice becomes a thing of the past, and so that genuine integration becomes an unquestionable part of our shared future,” Jandroković said.
