Zagreb - The parliamentary Committee on agriculture convened in Osijek on Wednesday to discuss the impact of climate change on food provision and cooperation with the scientific community to adapt the farm sector to that change.
The committee's chairwoman, Marijana Petir, said that in the last 15 years drought had been a major cause of a decrease in crop yields.
For instance, from 2013 to 2016, damage done to the agriculture was estimated at three billion kuna, which is equivalent to 43% of aid granted to the sector in the said period.
Petir also said that Croatia, alongside Greece and Lithuania, had considerably reduced greenhouse gas emissions, but she noted that the reason for that is that Croatia's livestock had been downsized by 30%.
Agriculture Ministry State Secretary Tugomir Majdak said that one of measures to help the farm sector to weather climate change is the construction of irrigation systems.
