Jandroković: Respect for victims, condemnation of Ustasha regime crimes

Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković on Wednesday paid tribute to the victims of the Jasenovac concentration camp and condemned the Ustasha regime responsible for the crimes, marking the 81st anniversary of the inmates’ breakout.

“We have shown that we respect the victims, that we sympathise with the families of those killed here, and that we also condemn the Ustasha regime that committed these crimes,” Jandroković said, adding that he was pleased that a large number of MPs from both the ruling majority and the opposition attended the commemoration.

The “Remembrance for the Future“ commemoration marked the 81st anniversary of the breakout by inmates from the Jasenovac camp, honouring victims of the regime and paying respect to survivors.

Held under the auspices of the Croatian Parliament, the event recalls 22 April 1945, when about 600 of the remaining 1,073 inmates at the Ciglana site attempted a desperate escape, aware they faced almost certain death. Only 117 survived.
