Zagreb - Today we are marking one of the most difficult days in Croatia's history which is also the day when we made stronger connections between us and when we grew stronger, Croatian Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković said in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Saturday.
Addressing the press ahead of a commemorative programme marking Vukovar 1991 Remembrance Day and the 26th anniversary of the destruction of that city in the country's 1991-95 war of independence, Jandroković said Vukovar was a symbol of Croatia's suffering, but also of the unity of the Croat people. He stressed that to honor this day everyone in Croatia must be better towards one another and do everything they can to help Croatia prosper.
Jandroković said the situation in Vukovar today was much better but that the city, like any other place in Croatia, needed jobs. He also said that Croatia-Serbia relations were important for this part of Europe, underlining that Serbia must assume responsibility for the war and rationally build relations with Croatia.
"Croatia wants the truth about the aggression against Vukovar to be known and recognised by Serbia. We see that these processes in Serbia are moving very slowly. Croatia is prepared to assist Serbia on its EU journey. We have several difficult outstanding issues left but we are prepared to resolve them, provided that Serbia accepts responsibility and rationally builds relations with Croatia", Jandroković said.
