Parliament Speaker urges swift U.S. Senate ratification of tax treaty to boost ties

Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković on Wednesday urged the U.S. Senate to ratify the bilateral double taxation avoidance treaty with Croatia as soon as possible, saying it would significantly strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

In a meeting with new U.S. Ambassador Nicole McGraw, Jandroković said the treaty, signed in December 2022, would give "a major additional boost to bilateral economic cooperation." Croatia remains the only EU member state whose treaty with the United States has yet to be ratified by the Senate.

Jandroković and McGraw agreed that relations between Croatia and the United States are excellent, with the two countries partners ad allies. The establishment of Strategic Dialogue, Croatia's inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program and Global Entry have further strengthened bilateral ties.

They also noted Croatia's contribution to European energy security through the JANAF oil pipeline and LNG terminal on Krk island, which "enhance supply diversification".

Parliament will host the Three Seas Initiative parliamentary summit next year, with an invitation extended to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson. "The U.S has been a strategic partner to the Initiative from the start".
