Politicians must give answers to present challenges, Parliament Speaker says

Zagreb - Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković on Monday opened the 10th simulation parliamentary session for secondary school students, saying that a politician is asked to provide answers to the challenges of today and that those answers cannot be banal.

The world we live in is very demanding and perhaps more complex than ever before due to the interweaving of new challenges, technologies, wars, natural disasters and diseases like COVID-19, Jandroković said.

Although the public sometimes think that banal debates are being held in the Sabor, the Sabor makes laws and adopts resolutions and declarations regarding all essential issues for Croatian society, he added.

The simulation session was attended by 151 students from 41 schools across Croatia, and it focused on an environmental protection bill and an environmental protection declaration.

Jandroković said he was pleased that many young people were interested in politics and what went on in parliament because lately, he said, politics was very often perceived as some sort of entertainment and something banal.

"At its core, politics is one of the most important activities because it organises people's lives, the state, significantly impacting the society we live in. For that reason, we cannot approach it flippantly," he said.
