Zagreb - The Croatian parliament on Wednesday rejected by a majority vote a motion by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the parliament to be dissolved and elections to be called immediately for the new, 11th parliament.
The proposal by the main Opposition party was rejected by 78 MPs in the 151-seat parliament, while 59 deputies from the Opposition bloc voted in favour of the dissolution.
For the SDP's motion to be adopted and for the parliament to be dissolved, 76 MPs should have voted for it.
The SDP submitted the proposal after the scandal dubbed "Mreža" which implicated an advisor to the then economy minister and a reporter in shady dealings.
Before today's vote, the Opposition reiterated accusations against the ruling HDZ party, insisting that the Sabor should be dissolved and that elections should be held now.
All the opposition MPs except 15 of them today attended the voting.
During today's debate the SDP leader Peđa Grbin announced protest rallies for 23 March throughout Croatia.
Croatia is due to hold parliamentary elections this year, and is waiting for ruling majority to set a date for the polls.
