Sabor rejects President’s proposal to appoint Artuković Kunšt as Supreme Court chief

Zagreb - The Croatian Parliament on Friday rejected President Zoran Milanović's proposal to appoint Sandra Artuković Kunšt as President of the Supreme Court.

Only 31 MPs voted in favour, while 82 voted against the nomination in the 151-seat legislature.

Artuković Kunšt had previously failed to secure support from the general session of the Supreme Court as well as the parliamentary Judiciary Committee.

Despite this, President Milanović remains firm in his support for Artuković Kunšt, a judge at the Zagreb County Court, and has announced he will nominate her again if a new call is issued - unless she decides to withdraw.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated that Artuković Kunšt will not receive majority support, regardless of the insistence on her candidacy, and urged her not to run again.

The public call for candidates for Supreme Court President, who also serves as the President of the State Electoral Commission (DIP), is issued by the State Judicial Council (DSV), which forwards complete and timely applications to the President of the Republic.

The President then proposes a candidate to Parliament after receiving opinions from both the Judiciary Committee and the Supreme Court's general session.
