Zagreb - The government is required to submit amendments to the Social Welfare Act to the Sabor before the summer recess, with special emphasis on improving the status and rights of caregiver parents, including the extension of the right to compensation after the death of the child they cared for.
The Sabor imposed this obligation on the government following a proposal by the HDZ caucus and coalition partners and after it previously rejected a proposal by Anka Mrak Taritaš (Glas) that the law be amended to enable caregiver parents to continue receiving an allowance for another six months after the death of the child rather than having to immediately register with the unemployment service.
The Sabor adopted the conclusion imposing this obligation on the government with 77 votes of the ruling majority, after which the opposition walked out of the parliament.
Murganić: I think parents should trust us
The aim of the amendments we expect from the government is to comprehensively address the rights of people with disabilities, especially the most vulnerable groups, children with developmental disabilities and their parents, MP Nada Murganić (HDZ) told reporters before the motion was put to the vote.
She explained that the amendments should regulate the extension of the allowance for caregiver parents after the death of the child. "That right is something that we will definitely support, with this conclusion we are in a way guaranteeing that it will be provided for in the law," she said.
